How I rekindled my dreams
I want to dream big, like when I was a kid
This post contains coarse language which may be offensive to some readers.
I used to dream big. Until I grew up. Adulthood is where my dreams died.
Lately, I've had inklings of creative momentum percolate through my brain. I can't deny this desire to be more than a rat in a race.
But it seems so hard to extricate myself . . .

You came into this world—a blessing
A poem for my younger son, who turned 8
You came into this world—a blessing
you came into this world
a blessing
wrapped in love, a cry
your journey began
taller i stand
when i'm holding
your hand
i put you to sleep
kiss on the cheek
i look at the clock
think of skipping rocks
with you
time has warped by
minutiae of life
through joy
through strife
i see you, baby

It's amazing how quickly things can go from happy to shit show.
One minute everything's fine. Then someone gets angry, seemingly out of nowhere. But if you examine further, there's often an underlying issue, some resentment that's been festering.
. . .GMC says being a good father, friend or son isn't good enough
"Like a pro" commercial: Inspirational or perfection-obsessed?

I was watching a football game on television with my sons, when a GMC commercial appeared. From a marketing perspective, their “Like a Pro” campaign is well-crafted, and targets its demographic (white-collar, upper-middle-class males) well.

My parents have been married 50 years and they're still going strong
Of the many things they've taught me, three stand out
Fifty years equals 2,607 weeks. Fifty years equals 18,250 days. Fifty years equals 438,000 hours. Fifty years is a long time.
But love helps time pass quickly. So, it’s safe to say—fifty years have zoomed by for my parents.
My mom and dad recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. They've been married five . . .

In the blink of an eye
A poem for my older son, who turned 10
In the blink of an eye
In the blink of an eye
you grew;
ten years gone by
i knew
the day
you were born,
my life
had changed
forever.
In the blink of an eye
you smiled;
a dimple
curl of the lip
sip of youth
dance of joy;
truth
beholden,
bond—
golden.
In the blink of an eye
i try
to freeze
a stitch of time
how sublime
to hear your laugh

This is why empathy between a parent and child is important
After dislocating my finger, I'm forever grateful for my kids' love and concern

I was 4 and I’ll never forget.
Our gazes locked. A kindergarten classmate; her eyes, red, swollen. Tears streamed down her face.
I felt something. You know the feeling. Starts in your heart, works its way through your throat, eyes, rolling like the surf crashing toward shore.
